Former methamphetamine lab clean in IndianaResidents at Water Dance Apartments on Tolworth Road in Indiana can breathe a collective sigh of relief.
Although a hazardous materials team did begin work on Wednesday morning to clean up an apartment where former tenants allegedly manufactured methamphetamine, there was no lingering danger to those currently residing in the complex.
After seeing a crew of blue-suited Indiana workers at the apartment and being blocked in by related vehicles, several residents made calls to the apartment management, the Shelbyville, Indiana Police Department and The Shelbyville News, concerned for their safety and that of their small children.
Water Dance Apartments contracted with Specialty Systems Inc. (SSI), a court-approved, certified hazardous materials team that specializes in methamphetamine lab remediation, according to Suzanne Dennis, a representative of the apartment complex.
The crew is controlling and disposing of any and all potentially contaminated materials, as per EPA and OSHA guidelines.
“Our current and future residents’ safety and comfort are our uppermost concerns,” Dennis said. “According to the police and the hazmat remediation team, there is no current risk to our residents. The extensive cleaning we have chosen to conduct is a reflection of our commitment to our residents. We feel that this situation is well in hand, and absolutely contained.”
The Indiana apartment cleanup stems from an arrest of former tenants, Jeremy A. Kennedy and Gayle A. Hood, both 26, earlier this year.
Indiana Authorities on April 24 extradited the two suspects, who had fled to McKenzie, Tenn., earlier that month. The pair were located within days of the drug bust.
According to statements the pair gave authorities, they fled Shelbyville, Indiana on April 7 after observing officers who were executing a search warrant at their apartment.
At the time of the search, Indiana police had evacuated the apartment building as a safety precaution after locating a clandestine methamphetamine lab inside. Members of the Indiana State Police Drug Lab team advised that the lab contained sufficient explosive chemicals to destroy the north end the building.
During the search of the apartment, Indiana officers located about 20 grams of methamphetamine. Any amount larger than three grams is considered a Class A felony, with a penalty of up to 50 years in prison.
The property was secured and all evidence was collected by Indiana state police. The apartment and any potentially hazardous materials have been properly secured and contained and are now being removed.
Cleanup is expected to take a maximum of three days, at a cost of $5,000; the cost of meth lab cleanups can climb as high as $150,000. Water Dance Apartments is paying the bill.
“This is a very small lab, probably created for personal consumption,” SSI spokesman Jim Moore said.
Indiana officers also located marijuana in plain view, as well as paraphernalia indicative of both marijuana and methamphetamine use.
Indiana officers originally had responded to investigate the well-being of three children, ages two to seven, after receiving a tip from a representative of the Shelby County, Indiana Office of Family and Children who believed drug activity was taking place.
Criminal charges include possession of a controlled substance; dealing a Schedule I-III drug; maintaining a common nuisance; neglect of a dependent; possession of a chemical agent/precursors; and possession of anhydrous ammonia.
Initial hearings and pretrial hearings for both Kennedy and Hood have been held, with a $100,000 surety bond set for each. A September court date is expected.
